    Description

    WW2-Era Japanese Mother-Of-Pearl Inlay, Silk(?)-Lined Jewelry/Music Box, Gorgeous!
This is an original, vintage mid-century jewelry/music box with an interesting story.  Apparently, a previous owner acquired this box years ago and found a stash of post-war Allied Military Currency in its drawers, suggesting that this box was made during the Second World War or shortly thereafter, and was probably owned by an occupying US serviceman and/or a family member.
Its historic, vintage appeal is equalled by a stunning beauty.  Bonsai trees grace the box, surrounding fishing boats and a Shinto temple.  Birds fly overhead and Mt. Fuji towers in the background.  A mother-of-pearl inlay frames the scene perfectly, and the black lacquer finish adds an elegant touch.  On the inside are five red, silk(?) fabric-lined drawers with brass handles, a three-compartment center console and a pop-up mirror depicting a geisha, a Japanese house (known as a minka) and a palm tree.  The music box wind-up switch is on the bottom, and the case clearly and effortlessly plays a song from a bygone era.  Although the keys do not fit the original lock, the lid closes securely, the silk(?) fabric lining is not ripped or torn, the drawers slide smoothly and the hinges are both in perfect condition.  "Japan A&C" is stamped on the bottom.
This box is over 70 years old and has some minor age and use-related wear.  The lacquer on a few of the edges shows some superficial cracking and there are a couple of very small spots on the box where it has chipped or scraped off.  Some scuffs, stains and a small scratch on the top of the center panel are present.  The mirror has a scuff on the left side and one of the mother-of-pearl stones is missing from the right front corner.  All-in-all, though, it is an absolutely gorgeous piece and in fabulous condition given its use and age.
As is common for vintage items, this piece is well built, weighing a substantial 3 lbs, 8 oz.  It's considered a medium-sized box, measuring 14"(l) × 6 1/4"(w) × 4 1/2"(h), and 9 1/2" tall when the top compartment and mirror are fully opened.
An exquisite historical piece sure to please that special someone.  We will carefully pack and ship this beauty to USA addresses only.  Please contact us if you have any questions or would like additional photos.  Check out our other fine vintage collectibles for sale on EBay and at our Etsy site Midcenturygiftshop, and thank you for your careful consideration.
