Description
Unique and hard to find. Offering a Japanese made, Old Large Lathe Turned Round Wooden Keepsake Lidded Bowl or Box. Very Rare in this size range. Measures 7.5" from lip to lip in diameter. Floral design with butterfly etched into the top of the lid. This piece dates to the period just after the Occupied Era when simple and small sized merchandise began to come out of Japan during their recovery period (late 1940's-early 1950's). I like to call these items "Miyajima Ware" because the original boxes and coaster sets came with simple carved scenes from that part of Japan. If you Google Miyajima, Japan and review the images, you will see the typical Torii Arch, Mountain, and boats in the water. All three elements were used on the older sets, carved into the wood. Most likely the factories were located there and the artists incorporated the local scenery as a trademark for their wares. Plus they may have located there to be close to a wood source, but that is only speculation. A few of these pieces have survived the course of time with their original labels in tact on the base. One I have seen identifies the origin of Miyajima, Japan (see example provided in the images), but there is no label on this piece being offered.
Condition: Generaly good condition. Note: Faint black ink markings on base, looks like a name and a year 65. Minor scratches and dings. No cracks or splits.
