ANTIQUE JAPANESE 110 YR OLD SIGNED ROSEWOOD TANSU TABAKOBON

Description

This is an antique Japanese
late Meiji Era (c.1905)
tabakobon
(tobacco box) complete with and bamboo and lid.
It is made of an exotic rosewood.
Two side cutouts aided in transporting it from place to place as well as add a decorative element. It was used to house a small ceramic brazier (not included) used to light ones kiseru pipe. A section of bamboo was used to dispose of used ash in ones pipe. It was brought to the guest in one's house so they could light their pipe as well as warm their hands on the
small
imari ceramic brazier that was kept within.
This tabakobon measures 6 1/2" square by 3 1/4" tall (17 x 8.5 cm). The bamboo measures 1 5/8" in diameter by 5" tall (4.1 x 12.5 cm) complete with zelkova wood lid.
Having been in storage for over a century and found in an old family warehouse, the tabakobon and bamboo remain in
fine
condition.
This tabakobon shows great skill in the craftsmanship, made using all dovetailed mitered corners (see pictures 3 & 4).
